چکیده

Using an outer rotation curve of the Galaxy, we explore the galactic constants and the mass of the Galaxy. We show that Θ0 of 200 km s −1 is more favorable than the IAU standard value of 220 km s, and also show that if Θ0 is smaller than 207 km s −1 the rotation curve beyond 2R0 is declining in Keplerian fashion. In the case of Θ0= 200 km s −1 and R0= 7.6 kpc, the total mass and the extent of the Galaxy inferred from the rotation curve are 2.0±0.3×10M• ⊙ and 15 kpc, respectively. These results may significantly change the previous view of the Galaxy, that its outer region is dominated by a massive dark halo extending out to several tens of kpc.

Declining Rotation Curve and Brown Dwarf MACHOs

If the Galactic rotation speed at the Solar circle is ∼ 200 km s or smaller, which is supported by several recent studies, the rotation curve of the Galaxy could be declining in the outermost region. Motivated by this, we investigate the effect of such declining rotation curve on the estimate of the MACHO mass and the fractional contribution of the MACHOs to the Galactic dark halo. Using Hernqu...

Pseudo Rotation Curve connecting the Galaxy , Dark Halo , and Local Group

We construct a Galacto-Local Group rotation curve, combining the Galactic rotation curve with a diagram, where galacto-centric radial velocities of outer globular clusters and member galaxies of the Local Group are plotted against their galacto-centric distances. The high-velocity ends of this pseudo rotation curve within a radius R ∼ 150 kpc are well traced by a rotation curve calculated for t...

The H α kinematic of the Cartwheel galaxy ?

We report on high spectral and spatial resolution kinematic observations of Hα emission from the Cartwheel system obtained with a scanning Fabry–Perot interferometer. Velocity fields for two galaxies were measured, for the main galaxy of the system, the Cartwheel galaxy, and for a spiral companion ∼ 25 h−1 kpc to the north. The velocity field and the rotation curve of the spiral companion shows...

The Distribution of Dark Matter in a Ringed Galaxy

Outer rings are located at the greatest distance from the galaxy center of any feature resonant with a bar. Because of their large scale, their morphology is sensitive to the distribution of the dark matter in the galaxy. We introduce here how study of these rings can constrain the mass-to-light ratio of the bar, and so the percentage of dark matter in the center of these galaxies. We compare p...

The rotation curve of the small-mass starburst galaxy M82 has a steep nuclear rise, peaking at 200 pc radius, and then, declines in a Keplerian fashion. This rotation curve mimics that for a central bulge of spiral galaxies with high concentration of stellar mass. The declining rotation indicates that its extended disk mass is missing. In order to explain this peculiar rotation characteristics,...
